third year is sooo different from the 1st & 2nd years.
when our patient contact was basically just once a week beforehand, we are seeing them every single day these days. and that is the reality.of doing medicine.really.
i am enjoying it so far, albeit feeling all flat by the end of the day. now, i am no longer confined in the lecture theaters. the hospital is my learning ground now.
i didnt expect the hospital i'm in at the moment to be so big! i think it's bigger than the city h. or royal h.
the first monday morning we had introductory talk by our coordinator. and just when i thought that i would no longer get the question, i along with the other six students who are in my group were asked:
"why do you want to do medicine?"
that's the hardest question you can ask a medical student. really it is. oh well, for me at least. honestly, i still havent found the perfect answer to that question. you know, the kind of answer that can actually make people go "wow!". truth is, i was directed to this path. ya know, just about every parents want their children to be a doctor, my parents were one of them. and at the age of 17, how the heck was i suppose to know what i want to do after high school? but now that i am in the medical field, the more i learn, the more i love it. i may not be a good communicator, but i am learning. being ya know, this job surely requires a lot of communication. not just with patients.after being briefed how our 7 weeks of general med going to be, we were taken for a tour around the hospital. oh well, not the whole hospital, just the wards, the library, the undergraduate room. for the past three days, my learning hours were from 9 to 5. and it was a lil bit hard to get up yesterday& today. by wednesday, i wonder "when will friday come??" haha. that's just a tiny taste of how my working hours gonna be like. i couldnt imagine how the doctors cope with long shift. hukhuk.
and so far, i havent seen anything interesting just yet. all we've been doing were revisions of our clinical skills. on normal patients. by normal i mean no significant symptom like caput medusae or even jaundice. most of the patients that i examined were admitted for m.i or angina. which can be pretty boring. owh, i saw a patient with hernia on tuesday, but that's not interesting enough. and owh, were were being taught on radiology today. and i got to see a patient was being m.r.i-ed. ya know, scenes from house the tv series came into mind and hey, i was in the same place as foreman, chase and cameron whenever they were in the observation room. heheh.
i have the day off tomorrow. oh well, an unofficial one. nothing is schedule for us tomorrow. but i should go to the hospital anyway. i havent got a case to write. i better search for one. and i probably better find the phlebotomist as well tomorrow. hehe, ya know what the word means? i havent got a clue beforehand. this week was the first time i ever heard it. it's the nurse who are expert of taking blood. i havent really take blood from real people, only from mr.brown-the plastic hand. it'll be cool if i can do that tomorrow.
and one thing i learn over the past few days is to get used with the abbreviations. i'd get lost whenever the doctors were saying sumthing like AAA or PE or OGD whenever they were teaching. i'm still not sure what OGD stands for.
this post is getting way too long.i havent even get to the part how nice my groupmates are! oh well, there's always next post, aye?
